Étymol. et Hist. 1835, supra. Empr. à l'ital. du nord cernida (DEI) désignant à Venise (dep. 1585 Garzoni, ds BATT.) une « troupe de milices urbaines » instituée en 1508 (DU CANGE, s.v. cernida²), spécialisation de cernida « choix » attesté en 1583 (ds TOMM.-BELL.), lui-même du b. lat. cernita pour le class. cretus de cernere « distinguer, discerner ».
